Three - dimensional numerical simulation of flow around bridge sub-structures

Abstract

A commercially available three-dimensional hydrodynamic model was used to simulate the flow which occurs within a scour hole at the base of a cylindrical pier. The results of the numerical simulation were compared to the laboratory findings of Melville and Raudkivi (1977). Quantitative and qualitative agreement between the studies was quite good. Discrepancies between the results of the two studies may be attributed to turbulent closure and parameter estimation. The results suggest that three-dimensional modeling is suitable for analyzing the properties of previously uninvestigated flow regimes which occur around bridge substructures.
