Polarization switching in optical microsphere resonator

Abstract

A general electrodynamical theory of a high-Q optical microsphere resonator in an external alternating magnetic field is reported. We show that such a system can change a polarization state of the whispering-gallery-mode photons confined in the sphere due to the Faraday effect. This property can be used in all-optical switches and logical devices. The contribution of the Kerr nonlinearities is also discussed.
