Modeling the Electrical Production Potential of Non-Planar Photovoltaic Modules

Abstract

Modeling of photovoltaic (PV) applications have relied on the homogeneity of each cell on a module. This is due to the rigidity of the conventional crystalline silicon. With the development of thin-film, PV material can withstand significant strain from bending while retaining performance. Flexible material has the ability to conform to a surface rather than be installed on top of a surface, but it sacrifices module homogeneity and therefore complicates the ability of the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) conditioning electronics due to the mismatch current generation. This paper presents an approach to model and analyze the electrical performance of non-planar PV applications with respect to a surface with a constant curvature. The results of this approach quantifies the tradeoff of increased electrical generation for increased current variance.
