Islamic endowments: The need for a new charter

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Based on the significant role that Waqf plays in the public life of Muslim societies, this contribution suggests the establishment of new charter in Islamic endowments (Awqaf) to enhance that role. This new building block aims to revive and preserve the effective role of the Awqaf. The paper argues that the need for such a charter that exceeds the enforcement of law and its obligation so that the perpetrators of the law cannot evade and circumvent it. Just as constitutions protect individual liberty and private property, we need a charter with constitutional power that protects Awqaf and adheres to the conditions of the waqf (the donor).
