Abstract

The effect of the strain dynamics of surface irregularities on acoustic phonon scattering in thermodynamically stable, atomically irregular solid surfaces, is put in analytic form. The corresponding intensity reflection coefficients are calculated in general as configurational averages in these surfaces. They are dispersive, implying diffraction effects. The ideally flat surface results are retrieved as an appropriate limit.
