Abstract

The energy consumption of data centers is accounted for 15% of the total expenditures of a data center while data centers have a non-negligible share of the total energy consumption of the society. This chapter summarizes the proposals dealing with energy consumption and its reduction possibilities. It reviews the energy consumption of data centers' hardware infrastructure and discusses middleware proposals, which optimizes the energy consumption of data centers. Cooling and heat control play a crucial role in the data center facilities: they are necessary to precede hardware failures; however, significant amount of energy is utilized by these equipments. The chapter takes a closer look at the impact of different data center network architectures on power consumption.
