External Josephson effect in Bose-Einstein condensates with a spin degree of freedom

Abstract

The Josephson effect between two spatially separated Bose-Einstein condensates of atoms each of which can be in two hyperfine states was discussed. Equations of motion were derived for this system which were analogues to the Bloch equations. The dynamics of the system was mapped onto those of a classical particle in a well. The density and spin modes of oscillation, and stable equilibrium points of the motion that were unstable in the spinless case were calculated.
