This paper presents 24-kW synchronous reluctance motor for close coupled centrifugal pump. The stator of the machine has 4-poles, 36 slots which are similar to an induction motor. The paper is focused on a new rotor design of the motor firstly by the finite element method (FEM). It is aimed to reduce power losses and torque ripples. The rotor is optimized with series of varying flux barrier width, flux carrier width, barrier edge angle and shaft diameter. The surrogate assisted technique has been applied while using a particle swarm optimization method in order to improve the performance of the motor. The simulation carried out at different designs and shapes and finally chosen the best 3 V-shaped flux barriers design for the prototype development. The simulation and experimental results show the excellent potential of the suggested optimal rotor design which can provide a good average torque with low ripples and can be right choice for the industrial applications. The main advantage is an increase of power with low power losses and good thermal performance.
