Critical electric fields and Stark resonances in the hydrogen atom

Abstract

The exact values of critical electric fields Ec for different states of a hydrogen atom, including its ground state, as well as the widths Γn of the Statk resonances at E = Ec, are calculated (at E = Ec(n1, n2, m) the potential barrier for an electron in the (n1, n2, m) state disappears. Using the modified quantization condition with barrier penetrability included, we explain the dependence of Γn on the principal quantum number n.
