Critical comparison between energy consumption in large capacity reverse osmosis (RO) and multistage flash (MSF) seawater desalting plants

Abstract

This paper compares the energy consumptions by the sea water RO and MSF desalting plants when the later is combined to steam power plant (i.e. dual purpose power-desalting plant). To overcome the proliferation of small equipment in large RO plant, a scheme is presented to enlarge the high pressure pump of the RO system, combine it with steam power plant, and drive it with steam turbine. Also a scheme to combine a hybrid MSF/RO desalting system with steam power plant is presented.
