Convection heat transfer from a flat plate with uniform surface heat flux; experimental and computed results

Abstract

Convection heat transfer from a flat plate with uniform surface heat flux is studied experimentally at plate Reynolds numbers from approximately 20 to 1500, for Newtonian and shear thinning liquids with Prandtl numbers 50 to 580. Finite element computer simulations using a Streamline Upwind Petrov Galerkin formulation on biquadratic isoparametric elements agree closely with experimental local plate surface temperatures demonstrating the success of this formulation as a tool for analysis of process heat transfer.
