Characterization and growth of lead sulfide whiskers

Abstract

The structure and morphology of whiskers grown on an Al-spiral coil inside the nozzle of a kerosene burner were investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The whiskers were formed of lead sulfide crystals with axes along 〈001〉 direction and encapsulated in an amorphous carbon sheath. High-resolution imaging revealed the arrangements of rows of lead atoms in the PbS crystal. The growth of PbS whiskers following the vapour-liquid-solid (VLS) growth mechanism is discussed.
