Abstract

We develop beamforming algorithms for information relaying over shared non- selective fading channels in wireless sensor networks. We consider an amplify- and-forward relay setting whereby the received relay data are first scaled prior to forwarding to a destination via beamforming over a shared channel. The beam- forming weights are broadcasted by the destination to the relays and are formed based on the individual relay-destination channel coefficients and an m-bit description of the source-relay channel coefficients. We present a method for choosing the m-bit quantizer function, employed at the relays to encode the source-relay channel quality levels, that optimizes the uncoded bit error rates at the destination. As our simulations and analysis reveal, using a coarse single bit description of each source-relay channel coefficient results in a small increase of the uncoded bit error rates at the destination.
