A Modular High Voltage Pulse Generator for Water Treatment Applications

Abstract

Water treatment is an economically vital process that has long been studied in literature. Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) is an effective method to kill microbes through irreversible electroporation for water disinfection. In this paper, a modular pulsed generator topology based on full bridge submodules (FBSM) is presented. The generator is fed from a relatively low DC source and boosts the voltage up to 10 kV. The FBSMs are arranged such that all modules are charged in parallel from the supply while load resistance is bypassed and, then, discharged in series across the load to achieve the desired output voltage. Thyristors rated at the input DC voltage are used to ensure voltage balance during charging process of FBSMs without sorting. The detailed operation and configuration of the proposed generator is presented. Simulation results are presented to validate the viability of proposed topology.
